From Bout to Brooch: Reinventing the Groom’s Signature Accessory

LV Dynasty Pearls Brooch

If you watched a second of the 2024 Awards Season, you probably spotted any number of celebrities sporting a brooch on their lapel. Bejeweled or understated, the brooch is a statement accessory, quite fancier or more decorative than a traditional lapel pin. It has become especially popular among A-listers, most significantly the men on the red carpet. From Timothée Chalamet and Michael B. Jordan to Justin Timberlake and Matthew McConaughey, leading men are donning jacket jewels and we’re here for it. Vogue agrees, declaring the “dazzling brooch” the biggest menswear trend at this year’s Oscars. These decorative pins have been popular with former generations (and for a brief moment in 2021) but are making a significant comeback. We predict the brooch will infiltrate the wedding market, taking the place of the boutonniere and pocket square for fashion-forward grooms.

A groom I worked with a few years ago wore a beautiful hummingbird brooch because it was meaningful to his bride. It was a lovely sentimental touch to his outfit while also making a cool fashion statement.

Any opportunity to include an heirloom piece in the wedding attire is one we jump on, but for grooms, this often stops at passed-down cufflinks or a keepsake watch. When we approach styling for our clients, we keep the entire look in mind. This not only includes the clothing, but every bit of the sartorial story from head to toe.

When it comes to wedding fashion, we often enlist specialists like Julie Sabatino of The Stylish Bride who dresses engaged couples worldwide for all their wedding-related festivities. She shares, “Brooches can be a great way for grooms to showcase their personality on their wedding day. I particularly love it when the brooch holds personal significance. For example, a groom I worked with a few years ago wore a beautiful hummingbird brooch because it was meaningful to his bride. It was a lovely sentimental touch to his outfit while also making a cool fashion statement.”

If there is no “something old” brooch to be borrowed, consider purchasing a statement piece that can be worn for the wedding and gifted to your future generations. Where to find the best brooch? Famed jewelers Tiffany and Cartier have accessorized the stars with both bespoke and archival pieces. For inspiration, take a look at how celebs wore it best, as documented by the New York Times, or shop some of our favorites from Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, and Dior.

As they say, all the world’s a stage, and all of fashion is cyclical. We’ve seen groom attire trends come and go (feather bowties, floral pocket squares, vests!), but for now, brooches are it.
